This past Friday night, the Rivera Raiders and Weslaco East Wildcats came together for something much bigger than football as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and the Greater Gold Foundation of the Rio Grande Valley’s GO GOLD September initiative.

In a special and emotional moment, children and families affected by childhood cancer were honored on the field. The families walked down the 50-yard line between the Rivera Raiders and Weslaco East football teams, surrounded by players from both programs, as they made their way toward the home-side stands to claps and cheers from the crowd.

It was a powerful show of support for the children and families across the Rio Grande Valley who continue to battle childhood cancer.

The Greater Gold Foundation of the Rio Grande Valley serves as a platform and voice for these families while providing financial assistance for needs such as utility payments, rent and mortgages, medical bills, travel expenses, final expenses, and other costs that can arise following a childhood cancer diagnosis.

A special thank you to H-E-B, the Greater Gold Foundation’s Title Sponsor for three consecutive years, for its continued partnership and support of the foundation’s mission.

For a few special moments last night, the rivalry was put aside and two football teams, two communities and one stadium stood together for one cause.
