PSJA North (25-10) vs. Brownsville Rivera (25-14): The first of four Valley vs. Valley bi-district contests at the Class 5A level presents a matchup between a pair of teams ending playoff droughts.
PSJA North, who finished second in District 31-5A, are making their return to the postseason for the first time since 2021, while also tying their most wins since 2020.
Leading them into the postseason is their dynamic backcourt of Alexandra Gonzalez and Madison Stanfield. The sophomore duo gives PSJA North an electric one-two punch capable of lighting it up from deep or slash through defenses for easy bucket.
Their two-headed monster helped the Raiders averaged 49.1 points per game this season.
Meanwhile, Brownsville Rivera is gearing up for its first playoff game since 2016, snapping a nine-year dry spell.
Junior Xandria Johnson is a big reason for Rivera’s turnaround, averaging a double-double this season with 11.1 points and 13.4 rebounds per game. Johnson has also been a force defensively, averaging 1.8 blocks and 1.4 steals per game.
Several others players help complement Rivera’s 5-foot-8 junior, including a trio of senior Lorraine Perez, sophomore Katy Zamora and Abani Perdomo which are all averaging at least 6.2 points per contes.
