Today was the start of the 2023 volleyball season here at Rivera Early College High School. The Rivera staff gathered and processed the athletes as they came in to start their first day of practice making sure they had a physical and their Rank One online forms completed. The varsity squad received their equipment bags and promptly dressed out in anticipation for their first day of practice.
Coach Elizabeth Avelar-Guerra who is entering her 31st season at the helm of the Lady Raiders started the day with a quick meeting with her varsity. She went over expectations with her girls and then proceeded to put the Lady Raiders through a conditioning workout. Coach Avelar-Guerra said during a water break, "I'm pleased and impressed with what I am seeing from the varsity and the underclassmen. They are getting after it. That's what I want."
The morning session ended and the coaches and girls broke for lunch. The afternoon session saw the Varsity and JV in the weight room picking up from where they left off from summer workouts. The freshman team stayed in and worked with Coach Avelar-Guerra on the main court and got skill training form her and her staff. The varsity then came to the main court and the freshman squad then proceeded to the weight room. The varsity did ball control drills and and competition drill and then broke for the day.
